As golfers in northern Europe struggle to find courses open for play in their home countries, Andalucía remains the ideal destination for winter golf. Play is possible throughout the year, and the new season of top amateur competitions once begins with the Andalucía Golf Tournament at Atalaya Old Course on Sunday 28 January (moved back one week from the original scheduled date).

In addition to the Costa del Sol’s famed year-round Mediterranean weather, participants will find the venerable Atalaya course – which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – in excellent condition and a customarily friendly club ambience.

The open amateur event is played under an individual stableford format in two categories (0 to 14.4 handicap and 14.5 to 28 handicap), with a one-tee start at 9 am.

Prizes valued at more than €1,500 will be presented to the three leading players in each category, as well as the trophies; there will also be special prizes for longest drive (men and women), ball closest to the pin and scratch; and, in addition, gifts for a raffle.

The Old Course was designed by Bernhard von Limburger, the 1925 German Golf Championship winner who became his country’s finest golf course architect of the time. With its wide fairways and large elevated greens, this championship course provides a challenge to golfers of all levels. Elegant and mature with spectacular views of the magnificent La Concha mountain, it is the perfect oasis of tranquillity on the otherwise bustling and vibrant Costa del Sol.
