Royal Guadalhorce Golf Club on the Costa del Sol will host the first leg of this year’s Andalucía Golf Challenge Destination “La Romana Golf Club Bahía Príncipe” on 5 May. The popular circuit was initially due to begin at San Roque Club’s Old Course in early April but, due to forecasts of rain, the tournament was re-scheduled for 20 May.

The entry fee for the Royal Guadalhorce tournament is €60 (not including buggy – shotgun start at 9.30 am), with the prize-giving cocktail reception also included. There will be major prizes for the top three players in each category, as well as for the winners of the longest drive (men and women) and closest to the pin, plus a special prize for the scratch winner.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the course is situated in a stunning natural setting that is free from any surrounding building construction. The original layout, created by Finnish architect Kosti Kuronen, was re-designed by Málaga-born international star Miguel Ángel Jiménez. Another outstanding feature of Royal Guadalhorce is its clubhouse, located in an attractive 18th century country mansion.

Course Description

The new 6,194-metre course is highlighted by large greens designed by Miguel Ángel Jiménez, and is considered a relatively long par-72 layout. It comprises two distinctive parts. The front nine is a classic British “parkland” design, without water, which extends through gently sloping hills and level fairways and is easy to walk on a hot summer’s day. The fairways blend in with the surroundings, with only two uphill slopes: on the first and fifth holes. The main challenge on the front nine involves dealing with various out-of-bounds areas and large, fast greens.

On the back nine the land has been carefully sculptured to create elevated greens and diversified fairways. Water comes into play on the 10th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 17th holes, and the large greens with varying borrows are difficult to read, thus adding to the difficulty of the second nine.

The whole course features an extensive variety of trees, both native and newly introduced, and several lakes. The feature hole is the sixth, a 354-metre par-four that is easy to reach in two but has an elevated green with pronounced borrows. Eminently suitable for major tournaments, Royal Guadalhorce Golf Club can be enjoyed by golfers of all levels.
