Unquestionably one of Europe’s finest courses, the exceptional Royal Sotogrande Golf Club hosted a resoundingly successful 13th leg of the 2020 Andalucía Golf Challenge-Destination Dominican Republic Ocean’s 4 Bahía Príncipe Circuit

This year’s open amateur Circuit, celebrating its 10th anniversary, is being played at a total of 18 superb courses – including several of Spain’s most renowned.

Organised by Andalucía Golf-España Golf magazine, the Circuit offers (as the main prizes) five week-long trips to the Dominican Republic including flights, transfers, all-inclusive five-star hotel accommodation and golf at three of the Caribbean’s finest courses: Ocean’s 4, Teeth of the Dog and Punta Espada.

Both days of the tournament were blessed with good weather, with the much-feared wind from the Straits not making an appearance on this occasion. Players thoroughly enjoyed the Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed layout, as well as the superb state of the course and its outstanding level of maintenance.

Apart from prizes for each tournament (premium-brand apparel from the fairway+blue boutique in Puerto Banús, DO Somontano wines, sports equipment from Holiday Golf, etc.), the top three finishers in each category plus the scratch winner obtain places in the circuit’s grand finale (at Atalaya Old on 21 November) with the chance of securing one of the five Dominican Republic holidays.

The top three players in category one were Alejandro Martínez Arasso (37 points), Juan Delgado Zambrano (36) and Feliciano García Barragán (34). As both Alejandro Martínez Arasso and Feliciano García Barragán had previously qualified for the grand finale of the Circuit, their places went to Francisco López Castro (fourth) and, interestingly, seventh-placed José Román Bonilla Rubio, as Juan Enrique Martínez Huot (fifth) qualified as the scratch winner at Sotogrande and Adrián Bonilla Ramírez is under-18 so not eligible for a prize.

Leading the way in category two, with 41 points, was José María Delgado Aymat, followed by Jesús Castillo Aguilar (40) and Dennis Diaconescu (36).

The scratch winner was the aforementioned Juan Enrique Martínez Huot with 30 points.

As for the special prizes, closest to the pin was won by Rafael Fontán Zubizarreta, and longest drive went to Myriam García Alegre and Álvaro Ballesteros Blanco

The next scheduled tournament on the Andalucía Golf Challenge-Destination Dominican Republic Ocean’s 4 Bahía Príncipe Circuit is 10 October at Santa Clara Granada
