The summer season has arrived with reassuring data on the area’s water reserves. It is essential, however, to always remember the importance of responsible water consumption policies.

The public utility company Acosol, which comes under the auspices of the Western Costa del Sol Council of Municipalities (Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental), manages the whole water cycle: i.e. all the processes from water catchment to its return to nature.

The company also maintains more than 200 kilometres of supply pipelines – both main and secondary – that carry water to private homes and general deposit tanks for urbanisations and municipalities, so that other companies can then take charge of distributing it to users.

This large network of pipelines has two branches: East, which extends from the La Concepción reservoir in Istán to Torremolinos; and West, which starts at the same point and extends to Manilva. The water utility company is also responsible for the cleaning, maintenance and preservation of 134 deposit tanks and 100 pumping stations.

In addition, Acosol is strongly committed to the use of recycled water for the irrigation of golf courses and other amenities such as parks and green areas.

Furthermore, the company is always seeking new alternatives for recycled water consumption such as, for example, its use in cement manufacture and for compacting the foundations of dirt roads and tracks.

Many visitors and tourists take advantage of the start of summer to enjoy the magic of the Costa del Sol’s municipalities, and play one of the area’s most popular sports: golf. As noted above, Acosol makes a firm commitment to the use of recycled water for golf course irrigation – as one of its key principles is respect for the environment.

More than 300,000 cubic metres for each golf course

The amount of water supplied annually by Acosol is approximately 300,000 cubic metres for each golf course, a total that represents about 2,500 cubic metres of water daily in the case of an 18-hole course. Taking into account weather conditions and the time of year (from October to March, depending on how much rain falls), they have the possibility of meeting their supply needs from rainfall or from their own resources.

The utility company is fully aware that the golf segment plays a major and indispensable role in easing the seasonal nature of tourism – as a key part of the area’s socio-economic engine – and to that end strongly supports the activities of golf courses in the western Costa del Sol area.
