Built in the 1970s and designed by renowned Málaga architect Pepe Gancedo, popularly known as “the Picasso of golf”, Torrequebrada is one of the most popular courses on the Costa del Sol for golf tourism, especially among visitors from the UK and Ireland. And this comes as no surprise, because it is a delight to play.

The course was inaugurated in 1976,” says manager Francisco Ruiz, “and its style of construction, surroundings and size are barely imaginable these days. Its fairways are wide, the greens expansive, and the vegetation abundant and extremely varied – we have more than 100 classes of plants. “If you looked at Torrequebrada from the air you would see that, even though we are in a fairly heavily built area, the course has been designed in such a way that the houses don’t enter into play. We have had to install netting, as a precaution, on only three holes. The trees, mainly pine and palm trees, hardly let you see any of the houses when you are in the middle of the fairway, and all you see before you are views of the sea and mountains.”

-How would you describe the course? Tough? Easy to play?

–It’s an extremely attractive course that enables you to use all the clubs in your bag. We have holes that might seem very short and simple – for example, the famous third, a 90-metre par-3 – but which can be quite difficult, like this one, with its green surrounded by bunkers and almost always affected by wind. The fairways, as I noted, are wide and allow you to hit the ball without too much fear.

-What other holes stand out?

–The 11th, for example, another par-3 of 164 metres, whose very undulating green is surrounded by water, bunkers, and palm and pine trees. The 16th is also a very, very attractive hole. It’s a par-4, ranked number one on the handicap index, and it requires great skill from the tee to reach the ridge of the green.

-Would it be fair to say that this is Pepe Gancedo’s most important course?

–One of the most important, definitely, and the first course where he made his imprint and established the style he would follow later.

-What does Torrequebrada offer golfers this summer?

-As always, we have special offers to play early in the morning, re-visits, etc. But the most important thing for us, what makes us stand out from the competition, is the quality of the maintenance. We receive a lot of praise from clients and that makes us feel we are following the correct path.
