In a month when the world’s most popular (arguably) senior golfer died, another ageless enthusiast on the other side of the world celebrated a milestone anniversary – and offered some wise counsel on life. Phillip Pinnell turned 100 a week before Arnold Palmer sadly passed away at 87 and was, understandably, asked to reveal the secret to his longevity.
“I love the game… and I love to play good golf,” he told the Messenger newspaper in Adelaide (South Australia). Mr Pinnell started playing golf eight decades ago while a teenager and still plays at least once a week at the Glenelg Golf Course, where he is the club’s oldest playing member. He said he had been in “fairly good health” most of his life.
The World War II veteran enjoyed birthday celebrations with his family – including a golf-playing daughter and son aged 63 and 68, respectively – and was later treated by residents to a surprise party at his retirement village home.
