The daughter of Norwegian immigrants (her father was a sailor), she excelled in many sports, not only golf. In 1932 she competed in the Los Angeles Olympics, where she won three gold medals and set three new world records in speed and endurance events. He excelled throughout his life in some twenty sports. Her nickname Babe was given to her during her time as a baseball player (in honor of a great player, Babe Ruth), an activity with which she earned her living, as well as with basketball. She was named Female Athlete of the Year five times.     <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">His love for golf was late, at the age of 18, although, once he tried it, he practiced this sport without rest. He won his first tournament two years later, in 1935. However, due to her earnings from baseball and basketball, her amateur golf status was revoked. She did not consider herself a professional golfer and did not participate in the Tour. In 1940 she participated in the Western Open, which she won four times. Between 1946 and 1947 she won 17 amateur tournaments in a row, including the US Womens Amateur and the British Ladies Amateur. She turned professional in 1949 and was number one on Tour five years in a row. She won 31 professional tournaments, including three US Women Opens.       <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2368\" src=\"https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/babe-zaharias-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"700\" height=\"950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/babe-zaharias-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/babe-zaharias-1-221x300.jpg 221w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The 1945 Los Angeles Open was not his first appearance on the men\u2019s circuit, as in 1938 he had played in the same tournament, which he entered as simply as filling out the entry form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Although she did not make the cut, that 1938 tournament was a successful experience for her, and not only on the professional level, as there she met George Zaharias, a professional wrestler who was also involved in golf. Like her, he didn\u2019t make the cut and the two spent the weekend together. Months later they were married.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Babe was diagnosed with cancer in 1951, at the age of 36. He continued to play golf until 1955 and died a year later, at the age of 42. Her death made headlines around the world.
