One of two 18-hole layouts at Atalaya Golf & Country Golf, Atalaya Old Course is – without a doubt – one of southern Spain’s most prestigious and high-pedigree courses, thanks to its design and its location, in the heart of the Costa del Sol between Marbella and Estepona.<\/p>\n
Manager Andr\u00e9s S\u00e1nchez is convinced the course is one of the best in the area. “It was designed by German Bernhard von Limburger in 1968,” he recalls, “on a plot of land with few slopes and abundant vegetation, close to the beach, between Estepona and Benahav\u00eds.” It was built as courses were during that era, when land wasn’t a problem on the Costa del Sol and the developers could be generous. <\/p>\n
“This course is completely flat and therefore perfect to walk. For 10 years it was the venue for the PGAE (Professional Golfers’ Association of Europe). In 2012, in spite of the crisis, we have carried out a lot of renovation and maintenance work, which has enhanced the quality of the course: new drainage, improvements to the irrigation system, etc. In the clubhouse, we’re completing a terrace for 75 diners, new offices, a gymnasium and also new changing rooms… In short, we haven’t stopped, and all with the final and clear objective: to host major national and international tournaments.”<\/p>\n
As far as the number of rounds is concerned, Andr\u00e9s S\u00e1nchez says he is satisfied with how things are progressing for his course. “In 2012 we experienced a significant increase in comparison with previous years. And that in spite of a 13 per cent rise in IVA (VAT), which has devastated, and continues to devastate, many courses.” <\/p>\n
“There has been an increase in the number of golfers on the Coast and also, of course, at Atalaya Golf. My expectations for the immediate future are optimistic.”<\/p>\n
