In recent years, despite “restructuring” and “resizing”, golf courses have struggled to survive. Key markets have collapsed, in the case of Andalusia, such as the English, Irish, etc., and other emerging markets have not yet recovered. IAGTO, the largest association of golf tour operators, has sent a very worrying letter to the golf federations of the Spanish tourist areas. They say that if VAT goes from 8 to 21 percent, our destination will sink even deeper into misery. It would have the opposite effect of what is intended, which is to increase revenue: it would drop considerably because income would be drastically reduced and other golf destinations would be strengthened, perhaps forever.

Managers of golf courses in Andalusia have met at the Baviera golf club to try to unite and agree on a response to what they consider an irreparable outrage, which among other things would send dozens of workers out of work.

Nobody understands that suddenly, without anesthesia, 13 points of VAT are raised. The directors of the Andalusian golf courses want them to be considered infrastructures of tourist interest and not mere sport entities.

For this reason, they have agreed that the Tourist Boards, the Regional Ministry and other institutions should make their demands known to the Ministry of Finance, so that they can benefit from the 10% VAT, two points more than what they pay now and not 13 as is being claimed without any logic or sense.

Golf is not a game for “well-to-do people”, especially in Andalusia, it is part of the tourist industry, it generates thousands of jobs, creates wealth and deseasonalizes tourism allowing hotels, restaurants, rent a car, etc., etc., to stay open all year round.

In the picture, a recent meeting of IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators) with representatives of the Andalusian golf industry at the Los Naranjos Club in Marbella.

Going from a reduced VAT of 8 percent to a general VAT of 21 percent, a thirteen-point increase all of a sudden, would leave the golf sector, which is making real efforts to survive in the midst of a generalized crisis that is hitting it hard, very hard.
