World number one Luke Donald will have no fear of playing in the sand at Abu Dhabi Golf Club this week during the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, after the Englishman successfully climbed out of the world’s largest ‘bunker’ – a giant dune in the Liwa Desert, the world’s largest unbroken mass of sand. In Liwa, Donald joined three-time and defending Abu Dhabi tournament champion Martin Kaymer of Germany in their duel among 80-meter-high sand dunes at the entrance to Rub Al Khali, a desert made famous by British explorer Wilfred Thesiger in 1940 and immortalized in the book Arabian Sands.” It’s no ordinary bunker!” said Donald, who last year became the first player in history to finish the season as number one earner on the European and American tours. “When you spend most of your time on the course, it’s easy to forget that Abu Dhabi is surrounded by such a charming desert landscape. In truth, I was in awe of the enormity of it all,” recounted the world number one. Kaymer and Donald lead the strongest field ever assembled at a tournament in the Middle East. Other contenders battling for the $2.7 million at stake in this official European Tour event include Tiger Woods, and current world number two and three Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy, respectively, as well as reigning major champions Charl Schwartzel (Masters) and Darren Clarke (British Open).
