This is one of the highlights of a report by the consulting firm Aguirre Newman on the current situation of the golf industry in our country, which is how we should consider this activity that, sport above all things, has a broad social support reflected not only in the number of members, practitioners and fans, but by the existence of a significant set of sports, social, labor and administrative organizations, support of a broad socio-economic framework that contributes to the Welfare State.

The present work updates other reports that are also fundamental to give the right dimension to the reality of Spanish golf, which is none other than an area affected by the crisis -as could not be otherwise given the seriousness of a situation of a universal nature- but, at the same time, with solid foundations that allow us to be moderately optimistic about the more immediate and longer-term future.

Relatively simple courses to meet the demand of Spanish players – 85% with handicaps over 18.5 – and foreigners, promotional campaigns in schools and universities and imaginative formulas to attract golf course customers are part of the solutions in the near future, with foreign tourists, so important for our country, always in the target.

The market study conducted by Aguirre Newman highlights, among many other things, several key issues:

– Tourism GDP is currently growing faster than the Spanish economy.

– The demand for golf is made up of domestic players and tourists.

– Spain is the second country in the world, after the United States, in terms of the number of foreign tourists whose main reason for traveling is golf.

– Golf tourism generates an annual expenditure of approximately 1.2 billion euros in Spain, which represents an average daily expenditure per traveler of 171 euros, that is, 75% more than the average daily expenditure of tourism in general.

– 85% of federated members have a handicap higher than 18.5 or no handicap.

– More than 85% of members are over 18 years of age.

– The Autonomous Communities with the highest number of members in relation to their total population are Cantabria, Madrid, Asturias and the Basque Country. The reasons for the popularity of golf in these areas are due to tradition, climate, disposable income and promotion of golf by the administration with schools and public courses.

Spain is the second country in the world, behind the United States, in terms of the number of foreign tourists whose main reason for their trip is golf.
