The Spanish golfer adds his second victory of the season -after the one achieved in the Dubai Dessert Classic in mid-February- and his sixth victory in the European Tour since he turned professional in December 2004. The Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2006, the Portugal Masters in 2008, the Qatar Masters in 2009, the Open de España in 2010 and the aforementioned Dubai Dessert Classic this year constitute the glorious precedents of a player consecrated with this new triumph before the ‘cream de la cream’ of the PGA European Tour. Alvaro Quiros already showed signs of his intentions last week, when he stroked the success in the Hong Kong Open, a good moment of form especially corroborated from the second day in this Dubai World Championship, when the golfer from Cadiz took the lead thanks to an extraordinary card of 64 strokes that was accumulated to another also brilliant 68 in the first, which then placed him at the top of the standings with four strokes ahead of the Swede Peter Hanson. An immaculate round, full of birdies -six to be precise- and culminated with an extraordinary eagle on the last hole, built a solid lead that was endorsed in the third round with a somewhat more discreet card of 70 strokes, with 4 bogeys neutralized with 4 birdies and another eagle, which gave the Scottish Paul Lawrie the option to get to within two strokes of the Spaniard.

The final day became from the first moment a spectacular mano a mano between Álvaro Quirós and Paul Lawrie, as their qualified pursuers -Luke Donald, Charl Schwartzel, Peter Hanson…- gradually succumbed to the success of both, despite the fact that their respective proposals were also full of good actions. A spectacular start to the day, with three consecutive birdies, further strengthened Alvaro Quiros in the lead, with a reaction capacity wisely demonstrated from the fourth hole, his first mistake of the day immediately compensated on the next hole. The error-mistake combination was repeated again on holes 6-7 before a new mistake on the 9th gave oxygen to the options of the Scotsman Paul Lawrie, who finished the first round with 5 birdies and no mistakes. A flatter second round by both, mostly resolved with pars, led to a truly heart-stopping finish, with a single stroke difference in favor of Alvaro Quiros when both reached the 17th hole. It was there, at that climax, when the enormous race of Alvaro Quiros came to light, who signed a spectacular eagle on the 18th hole in the image and likeness of the one achieved on the second day, an action that definitely left Paul Lawrie breathless. Special mention also goes to Pablo Larrazábal, tenth classified, and Sergio García, eleventh, who also showed the strength of Spanish golf. Rafael Cabrera, 26th; Gonzalo Fernández Castaño, 29th; and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, 44th and 44th, completed the remarkable Spanish performance in Dubai.

“It’s been a very nice end to the season!

Quirós was ecstatic with his triumph in Dubai, whose final moments he described as follows: “On the 18th I hit a good three-wood tee shot and another second shot. When I got to the green I thought about giving myself a chance by leaving it close and at the same time putting pressure on Paul, as we were counting on him having a birdie option. Besides, we had just seen Luke Donald’s finish and that also worried me, but I knew that if I made the birdie I could win the tournament. It was quite a long putt, between 13 and 14 meters from right to left, and not only did I leave it close but it went in!”.

“All the excitement of the last few weeks and positive thoughts came out when I holed that putt. I’m very happy. I think, quote unquote, justice has been done after last week. I’ve been playing well for a while but in Hong Kong the putting wasn’t with me, the last day was a shame. This week I played just as well but I managed to make the putts. Everything serves as a learning experience, things always happen for a reason.” “I knew I had to take a little step forward and I finally made it. It’s been two weeks of hard work and effort. Every day, at the end of the round, I would meet for about ten minutes or a quarter of an hour with Johan Elliot and Claes Nilsson, my managers, and then I would tell Mike Kerr, my caddie, what we had decided. I have also been in constant communication with Tita Lozano, my psychologist, and the effort has paid off: I have been able to see the bottle half full.”

“In moments of pressure, and there have been many, I have been able to remove my doubts in a very high percentage. We would make a list and we would go through it all together trying to answer one question: what does Álvaro Quirós need to go one step further? Everyone contributed their grain of sand. With Pepín Rivero, who is competing in the Final of the Senior Tour, we also sent messages to each other”. “Despite everything, we must not lose sight of objectivity, I have won a tournament and I have more than fulfilled the goal of finishing among the top 50 in the world – a situation I had been in before – but, from now on, I would like to stay there and be more regular. I hope for bigger things to happen. It was a special victory, here were the four best players in the world and very good players, but winning the Spanish Open in Seville was just as special, if not more so. Today it seemed more like a match-play tournament, Paul has been pushing me all the time and in the end Luke Donald also got into the fight”.

“I tried to enjoy myself and at the same time I fought until the last moment. It has been a very positive tournament. Tonight I will celebrate with the Spaniards, whoever wins pays for dinner and I’m going to do it with pleasure. There won’t be much more time to celebrate because tomorrow I’m flying to Las Vegas where I’m going to spend two days with Callaway, and on Saturday I return to Spain. I think I deserve a vacation. I love playing in Dubai, at this rate I’m going to have to buy a house and come and live here”.

With this victory, which carries a five-year exemption until 2016, Álvaro Quirós finishes sixth in the Race to Dubai, reaches 21st place in the world ranking, will play the four Majors and the World Golf Championship in 2012, and is placed fourth on the Ryder Cup list through the European Tour. In addition, he becomes the first European player to win three tournaments in the Arab Emirates -Commericialbank Qatar Masters 2009, Omega Dubai Desert Classic 2011 and Dubai World Championship 2011-, and adds the seventh victory in 2011 for Spanish golf, which amounts to 163 in the Tour: Pablo Martín (Alfred Dunhill Championship (December 2010), Álvaro Quirós (Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Dubai World Championship), Pablo Larrazábal (BMW International Open) and Sergio García (Castelló Masters and Andalucía Masters).

Álvaro Quirós has added to his list of honors with a spectacular victory in the exclusive Dubai World Championship, the end of the season on the European Tour, where the best players on the PGA European Tour meet.
