Miguel Ángel Jiménez underwent surgery yesterday and will be out for about five months after suffering a serious injury to his right leg.

The player from Malaga fell on Saturday while skiing in the Andalusian resort of Sierra Nevada and broke the tibial plateau, right at the junction with the knee. This is a delicate area. As soon as the accident occurred, Jimenez was transferred to Malaga. There he was operated on by Dr. Juan Oliver at the Quirón clinic in the Costa del Sol capital.

The intervention was successful. Two pins were put in his tibia and he is expected to be discharged this Monday, so, crutches in hand, the Churriana will be able to say goodbye to the year at home with his family.

The period of sick leave cannot be determined exactly, although it will be around four or five months. Everything will depend on the evolution of the rehabilitation.

Miguel Ángel Jiménez: “Yesterday at noon, skiing in Sierra Nevada, I lost control and fell. I felt a huge pain and immediately I knew I had broken something.

I was immediately attended to; I have to thank all the track assistance staff because they were wonderful, they took X-rays and, when they saw the break, we decided that I would have surgery in Malaga and they put me in an ambulance.

We notified Dr. Juan Oliver, who had everything ready at the Quirón Clinic when I arrived. I quickly underwent the pre-operative procedure and at 8 pm I was in the operating room. At 12 o’clock I woke up from the anesthesia.

I have broken the head of the tibia in my right leg, just at the junction with the knee, and they have put two pins in it. I think I will be discharged tomorrow or the day after, I will leave the hospital on crutches.

It will take me three, four or five months… to rehabilitate and be able to compete again. I was playing very well but… life comes as it comes. It’s been a very bad thing, never better said! Years ago I took a liking to skiing and I’m enthusiastic about it, although I knew I was running this risk.

But it’s not all bad news to end the year: in a matter of days we are going to inaugurate the Torremolinos Golf School and I am very excited about this project. Finally another of my dreams will come true!

Spanish golf is bidding farewell to 2012 with very bad news.
