The fifth edition of the best winter circuit in Europe could not have a better start. One of the best amateurs on the planet, specifically the third according to the world ranking, has been imposed in Torrequebrada after a beautiful final battle against Marcos Pastor and David Law.

Kinhult is a star of European amateur golf. Not in vain, he made the cut and finished in the top 35 in the last Nordea Masters, a European Tour tournament held in his homeland of Sweden. A final round of 66 strokes allowed him to take the victory with three strokes ahead of Pastor and Law. His staging was a declaration of intentions. He started with eagle on hole 1, in case there was any doubt, and on hole 2 he had already tied with Pastor.

Kinhult continued to press the accelerator. Firm, solid and confident. Without missing many shots and taking advantage of birdie options very well. He signed 31 strokes for the front nine and opened the gap in the standings. However, Pastor was not going to make it easy. The Cordovan still launched a last whiplash. He made two birdies on the second nine and forced the young Nordic to keep pushing. A gallant lesson from Marcos, who has been playing with a fractured calcaneus since the week before the first round of the European Tour School. Every night he undergoes a magnetotherapy session while he sleeps.

Kinhult is a prestigious winner for the Gecko. Recently signed by IMG, his future looks bright. Next week he will play the second phase of the European Tour School. His main goal, obviously, is to achieve the rights and play the European Tour. “I think I’m ready. I came here, precisely, to prepare for the School and I feel that the game is very good. I’ve played very well from tee to green, I’ve avoided problems and I’ve been able to take advantage of the par 5’s. I’m happy. The feeling is fantastic”, said the Swedish player after lifting the trophy.

Law and Pastor finished in second position, while in fourth place were British Luke Johnson and Canadian Brayden Eriksen. Law’s round of 62 strokes was especially noteworthy. On the 14th hole he was ten under par and more than one thought he could achieve the magic figure of 59 strokes. His great game and the excellent condition in which Torrequebrada has been presented have allowed a round of this caliber.

Next week will take place the second appointment of the Gecko. It will be held from November 3 to 5 in El Parador and Guadalhorce.

Amateur Marcus Kinhult has been crowned as the first winner of The Gecko Tour 2015/16.
