One seems to be reliving in a way what happened on the eve of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro\u00a0when the defections of some of the great figures of golf began to happen. Now it is Turkey\u2019s turn. The first of the great desertions was Tiiger Woods, who delayed his planned return and decided not to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open, which takes place this week. Now it is Rory McIlroy who has announced his\u00a0withdrawal from the Turkish tournament, the first of the three major final events that\u00a0will determine the winner of the Race to Dubai on the European Tour. <\/p>\n

The Northern Irish player\u00a0left no doubt as to the reason for his defection when asked about it:\u00a0\u201cI think it\u2019s obvious,\u201d he said, referring to Turkey\u2019s insecure security situation due to terrorism. The car bomb explosion\u00a0last week at the Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the series of deadly bomb attacks over the past 18 months (attributed to Kurdish rebels or Islamic State militants), coupled with the U.S. State Department\u2019s\u00a0travel warning on\u00a0Turkey advising Americans\u00a0 to \u201cavoid travel to southeastern Turkey and carefully consider the risks of travel to that\u00a0country, have contributed to this.\u201d The tournament will begin tomorrow at the Regnum Carya Golf & Spa Resort in Antalya. <\/p>\n

McIlroy said he had \u201dslept much better\u201d after deciding not to go. Others who have also pulled out at the last minute are\u00a0American Patrick Reed, who would have\u00a0to compete in Turkey in order to maintain his\u00a0European Tour card, and current\u00a0leader of \u00a0the Dubai Race, Henrik Stenson. <\/p>\n

At the moment the list of players for the Turkish Airlines includes only three from\u00a0the top ten\u00a0of\u00a0the Race to Dubai rankings: Danny Willett (2), Tyrrell Hatton (5) and Lee Westwood (10).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
