He finished third in the 2016 Quicken Loan National event on the US PGA Tour to announce his arrival in impressive style, although he had already gained two top-10 finishes on the Tour before joining the paid ranks.

Rahm has not returned to the Quicken tournament this week, instead opting to make his debut as an official member of the European Tour in the French Open, as part of his preparations for the British Open from 20 to 23 July (he will also be competing in the Irish Open next week).

At the Le Golf National course which next year will host the Ryder Cup, the 22-year-old Rahm opened with a one-under 70, six shots off the French Open lead.

Meanwhile, back in the US, Golf Digest magazine commemorated Rahm’s anniversary with “eight illuminating stats regarding the Spaniard’s success from the past year”…

– 12: PGA Tour professional starts before Rahm found the winner’s circle, which came in January at the Farmers Insurance Open. For context, it took Jordan Spieth 16 tries, Justin Thomas 39 outings and Rory McIlroy two years on the European Tour for their inaugural victories.

– $5,495,850: Earnings through 23 starts. Only five players made more in all of 2016.

– 9: Top-10 finishes, not counting his T-10 at the OHL Classic as an amateur. Seven have come this year, tied with Spieth for second-most behind Thomas’ eight.

– 210.18: Official world golf ranking points Rahm has accumulated in his 23 professional starts. If you divide that figure by his appearances rather than the OWGR’s minimum divisor of 40, Rahm would be No. 2 in the world behind Dustin Johnson.

– 3: Missed cuts. In the same span, the aforementioned world-beater Johnson has failed to make the weekend on four occasions.

– 3rd: In Strokes Gained/overall, with a 1,985 figure in 2017 and 2,036 total last year. Only DJ and Rickie Fowler top that output.

– 438: The distance, in yards, of one of Rahm’s drives at Austin C.C. during this year’s WGC-Dell Match Play. On the year, Rahm is averaging more than 305 yards off the tee.

– 69.71: Scoring average since Rahm’s turned pro.
