He may have had one of the most spectacular debut seasons of any player in history, but Jon Rahm was still a bit frustrated at the end of the 2017 European Tour. He is currently the highest-ranked European\u00a0in the world, in fourth place. The 23-year-old Spanish star won the season-ending\u00a0DP World Tour Championship following his Irish Open triumph earlier in the year, but arrived in Dubai knowing he couldn\u2019t finish top of the\u00a0earnings list regardless of the result. <\/p>\n

In an effort to make sure that doesn\u2019t happen again, and to increase his chances of a Ryder Cup debut in 2018, Rahm plans to play more\u00a0European Tour tournaments\u00a0in the season that just began with the Hong Kong Open (on\u00a0the\u00a0just completed season\u00a0he played\u00a0the minimum five regular Tour tournaments required to qualify for European Tour membership).<\/p>\n

\u201cFortunately I can keep playing like this and hopefully win again next year, and maybe play\u00a0this tournament with a chance to win the\u00a0Race to Dubai,\u201d said Rahm, who finished third in the\u00a0DP World Tour Championship behind Justin Rose and winner Tommy Fleetwood. \u201cNo\u00a0me\u00a0felt good that\u00a0mathematically no\u00a0had the\u00a0chance to win it (the Race to Dubai). Hopefully I can play better and really have a chance to make it.\u201d <\/p>\n

When asked if he would play more\u00a0tournaments on the European Tour, the Basque said: \u201cI will try. It\u2019s difficult, to be honest, having to combine both circuits,\u00a0and\u00a0plus with the\u00a0start of the year on the PGA Tour on the West Coast being so close to home for me, being defending champion at Torrey Pines. It\u2019s going to be hard to get away from that and come out here.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t set the schedule yet, so that\u2019s something I\u2019m going to look at,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m going to try to come to Europe. I love coming to Europe, clearly. I\u2019m successful in Europe and I want to keep coming over, have a lot of fun and hopefully keep playing golf. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a really ambitious person,\u201d said the\u00a0one-time world number one amateur\u00a0. \u201cI know it\u2019s going to be hard to top my first year because it\u2019s a really good first year. In fact, it\u2019s a really good year overall, period.\u00a0I\u2019m going to take a couple of days off.
