It took an agonizing play-off to find out the name of the winner.

The duel between the two most involved in the fight for the victory has been simply colossal. Angel Hidalgo has not stopped swimming, as they say colloquially, since the first day (79) left him in a complicated situation. And once he reached the top of the table, he did not give up.

With the best round of the day along with Enrique Marín’s, a 68 (-4), the golfer from Guadalmina turned the classification around. An overwhelming sequence of six birdies between holes 6 and 8 left him in a perfect situation to attack the lead, but a bogey on the 12th and a double bogey on the 13th cooled his chances.

Only one game behind, Alejandro del Rey reacted with an equally remarkable sequence of birdies, four between 11 and 15. The Madrid-born player reached the 18th tee tied with Ángel Hidalgo who was chewing his fingernails in the clubhouse, +1 for both. He missed the birdie, which extended the duel to a play off playoff.

On the extra hole, Angel Hidalgo scored a par that was a winner, given that Alejandro del Rey signed the bogey.

Winner this year in the Andalusia Cup, Ángel Hidalgo already knew what it was to win the Spanish Absolute Championship. He did it in the Valencian course of El Saler in 2016, a year in which he also won the International of Spain Under 18 Stroke Play and the Puerta de Hierro National Cup.

Also noteworthy is the role played by Pablo Rodríguez-Tabernero and Sergio Parriego, third in the standings with +3 to the total. The player from Seville fell out of the fight for the title with a round of 73 strokes (+1), while the player from Madrid, who has improved in the last two rounds, scored a good 69 (-3).

With +4, in fifth place, Enrique Marín made good on his great 68 -with five birdies in the last eight holes- to tie with cadet-age player José Luis Ballester, one of the tournament’s top names. The reigning champion of the Spanish Junior Championship finished with a card under par.

Angel Hidalgo from Malaga has won the title of Spanish Absolute Men’s Champion for the second time in his career after completing a phenomenal comeback in the course of the Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro, where Alejandro del Rey from Madrid has been a magnificent alternative.
