<\/a>Getting to Australia involves a long journey from almost anywhere in the world, and certainly from the northern hemisphere, so it is best to make the most of any time off. Accompanied by his wife, Angela, Sergio Garcia is in Queensland this week to compete in the Australian PGA Championship (official tournament of the\u00a0European Tour), and they took some time before the tournament to visit the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold\u00a0Coast. <\/p>\n

While there they\u00a0encountered a few\u00a0\u201clocals\u201d: a koala, an audax eagle, a python, kangaroos and a family of broad-tailed parakeets or rosellas. \u201cIt was amazing,\u201d said Angela.\u00a0\u201cI had never\u00a0been to Australia.\u00a0I have seen many pictures and videos of the animals here, but getting to\u00a0touch a koala, a snake and an eagle, as well as feed the kangaroos, was\u00a0something incredible.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cWe learned a lot about animals,\u201d Angela added, \u201cand what they are doing here at the sanctuary is really important.\u00a0They are helping a lot of animals that are injured or sick.\u00a0They are trying to release them back into the wild. We are animal lovers.\u00a0Whenever we see a dog or any kind of animal, Sergio always wants to pet the dog and I love animals too.\u00a0I often yell at Sergio to stop catching lizards;\u00a0we have a lot of funny stories about that.\u201d <\/p>\n

Sergio added: \u201cIt was a great experience to be able to see all the amazing animals they have here.\u00a0It was an incredible treat and we really enjoyed it.\u00a0I love animals \u2013 I always have.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple enjoyed meeting and learning about\u00a0Australian wildlife, but the kangaroos stole their hearts. \u201cI loved the kangaroos,\u201d said Angela.\u00a0\u201cThere was a little joey (baby kangaroo) that I wanted to take home with me, but I don\u2019t think they like that.\u00a0He was really good; feeding him was really great.\u201d<\/p>\n

To\u00a0Sergio it was the big male kangaroo\u00a0that caught his attention.\u00a0\u201cHe was one of those\u00a0guys you don\u2019t want to mess with. He was big;\u00a0you could see he had a huge chest.\u201d <\/p>\n

In\u00a0 regarding the competition, the Spaniard finished the first day in third position, one stroke behind the Australian\u00a0Jordan Zunic and Adam Bland, both with six under par.\u00a0Sergio is tied with four other local players.<\/p>\n

The reigning Augusta Masters champion,\u00a0with five\u00a0birdies and no faults in his first 18 holes, is the only non-Australian player in the top 14 of the provisional standings of the second tournament of the new European Tour season.\u00a0Heavy rains forced the competition\u00a0to be suspended twice, but in the end all players were able to complete the first day.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
