But it was because until that day, the Negro Women&#8217;s Golf Association <strong>champion<\/strong> had never before been seen at that tournament. It was a tumultuous time for blacks in the United States. It had been three years since the historic <strong>Supreme Court decision<\/strong> that eliminated racial segregation in public schools, and only eight months since a federal court had ordered that public golf courses in Nashville, Tennessee, be <strong>opened to African-Americans.<\/strong> However, the racial conflict <strong>was still simmering<\/strong>, and in Greensboro, North Calorina, a jury convicted three African Americans of<strong> trespassing<\/strong> for playing on a public golf course.  <\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-23978\" src=\"https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_001.webp\" alt=\"Ann Gregory, the unforgettable fighter for rights, 1956\" width=\"351\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_001.webp 1722w, https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_001-300x209.webp 300w, https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_001-1024x714.webp 1024w, https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_001-768x535.webp 768w, https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_001-1536x1070.webp 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/>Ann Gregory&#8217;s defeat, the beginning of her victory<\/h3>\n<p>Gregory&#8217;s opponent in that<strong> historic<\/strong> Indianapolis<strong> match<\/strong> was Carolyn Cudone. &#8220;I went out first,&#8221; she said, &#8220;and hit a good shot, which got a standing ovation from the crowd. Gregory&#8217;s shot was at <strong>least 20 yards longer than mine<\/strong>, but it only got a <strong>small ovation<\/strong>.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>Gregory took a <strong>2-up<\/strong> lead after the first <strong>nine holes<\/strong>, but Cudone was able to rally in the closing stages and eventually<strong> won the match 2 and 1.<\/strong> Cudone went on to become a <strong>five-time U.S. Women&#8217;s Senior Amateur champion.<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23988\" src=\"https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_006.webp\" alt=\"Ann Gregory, the unforgettable fighter for rights, 1956\" width=\"350\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_006.webp 414w, https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_006-215x300.webp 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Ann Gregory&#8217;s words after the famous match<\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;My husband told me I had no chance of winning&#8221; stated Gregory, 44, <strong>after the tournament<\/strong>. She did not triumph on this occasion, but Gregory took home <strong>more than 400 trophies and won more than 200 trophies from around the world<\/strong> during her career. <\/p>\n<h3>The moving story of Ann Gregory<\/h3>\n<p>Gregory was born in Aberdeen, Mississippi, on July 25, 1912. She was the third of five children born to Henry and Myra Moore. When she was only 4 years old, her parents <strong>were killed in an automobile accident<\/strong> and her former employer, a white family, took her in and raised her.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-23986\" src=\"https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_005.webp\" alt=\"Ann Gregory, the unforgettable fighter for rights, 1956\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_005.webp 800w, https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_005-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/andaluciagolf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ann_Gregory_005-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Years passed and he graduated from high school in 1930. She then moved with her sister and brother-in-law to Gary, Indiana. She began working as a caterer and <strong>played tennis in her spare time<\/strong>. In 1938, Gregory married Leroy Percy Gregory, a steel mill worker who also <strong>enjoyed playing golf<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n<p>In 1994, Ann began taking golf lessons from golf pro <strong>Calvin Ingram<\/strong>. Gregory soon became <strong>the first African American to play in the SGA Women&#8217;s National Championship<\/strong>. Her golf career ended in 1989 with a Gold Medal at the Senior Olympics.
