Atalaya Golf & Country Golf, with its two 18-hole courses, Old Course and New Course, is undoubtedly one of the most popular and representative complexes of the Costa del Sol.
Located between Marbella and Estepona, a few hundred meters from the entrance on the Benahavís road, this summer it offers prices to play that are hard to beat. Andres Sanchez, director of the resort, shows a legitimate pride for being in charge of a golf resort that has been at the forefront in several aspects.
-Why do you consider Atalaya a pioneering field?
-We are pioneers in many respects; first, because we are veterans: our Old Course dates back to the 1960s, and second, because we were among the first to install the most modern online marketing systems. We were also among the first to have a defibrillator, which we trained our staff to use. The marshal carries a portable one and we have others in the clubhouse and in maintenance. “Also,” adds Andrés Sánchez, “we have been among the first to install the QR system for reservations.” “Our idea,” he assures, “is always to move forward, to be at the forefront and one step ahead of other golf courses.
-Despite being one of the oldest courses on the Costa del Sol, you have always innovated, even in maintenance?
Yes, we were among the first to introduce reseeding, and we are constantly re-seeding the fairways. This year we are going to introduce, after the summer, several important changes in both the old and new fields.
-They are also going to work on the clubhouse….
-New locker rooms, new showers, a new terrace overlooking the 18th hole to be able to accommodate about 75 people…. In short, we have many projects.
-How do you foresee the summer?
-I expect it to be quite interesting. The first three months of this year have been good, mainly due to the good weather and the marketing effort we have made.
OLD COURSE
The Atalaya Old Course, inaugurated in 1968, accommodates all levels of play. It is suitable for both neophytes and professionals of this difficult sport, as it has very flexible tees. In addition, its driving range, one of the largest in Spain, offers golf lessons in different languages. The layout offers generous fairways, set on a very pleasant terrain, without large slopes. The greens of the Old Course are quite fast and most of them are located high up.
NEW COURSE
Opened in 1992, Atalaya New Course is located behind, more towards the mountain, the other course of the Estepona club. The fantastic panoramic views that can be seen from the course, which is easily adapted to the average golfer, stand out. Despite its relative youth, Atalaya New Course has become one of the most visited courses on the Costa del Sol.
