The European Union Solheim Cup 2023 Trophy is now an institutional reality. The European Team was honoured this Wednesday, 11 February 2026, with this prestigious award at the 2023 and 2024 National Sports Awards ceremony, held at the Royal Palace of El Pardo and presided over by Their Majesties the King and Queen.

The award, granted by the Higher Sports Council (CSD), recognises the best athlete, team or entity from a member country of the European Union. In this edition, the jury chose to highlight the historic triumph of the European side at the Solheim Cup held in 2023 at Finca Cortesín (Málaga, Andalusia).

The European Union Solheim Cup 2023 Trophy honours an edition that concluded with a 14–14 tie against the United States, a result that allowed Europe to retain the title in one of the most thrilling contests in the tournament’s history.

The competition, held on the Costa del Sol, marked a milestone for European women’s golf and consolidated Andalusia as a host of major international sporting events.

The captain of the European team in that edition, Suzann Pettersen, was responsible for receiving the European Union Solheim Cup 2023 Trophy on behalf of all the players and the coaching staff.

«It is an honour that the work of the entire team at the Solheim Cup 2023 is being recognised with this European Union Trophy».

Pettersen recalled the special nature of that week at Finca Cortesín:

«Retaining the trophy after such a closely fought week was a very special moment for all of us, one that will remain in our memories forever».

Francisco Salado highlights the tournament’s impact on Málaga

Francisco Salado, president of the Málaga Provincial Council and Turismo Costa del Sol, congratulated the award recipients and stated that «it is a great satisfaction that this tournament was held in the province of Málaga».

According to Salado, the edition held on the Costa del Sol represented a milestone for European women’s golf and for the international projection of Andalusia as a destination for major sporting events.

He also underlined that the Solheim Cup 2023 left a significant legacy, both because of the competitive level and its international media impact, with special prominence given to Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, whose performance was decisive in achieving the final tie.

An award within the 2023 and 2024 National Sports Awards

The European Union Solheim Cup 2023 Trophy was presented as part of the National Sports Awards corresponding to 2023 and 2024. During the same ceremony, outstanding figures from national and international sport such as Rodrigo Hernández ‘Rodri’, Aitana Bonmatí, Álvaro Martín, María Pérez and Lamine Yamal, among others, were also recognised.

The award highlights not only the sporting success of the European team, but also the values of teamwork, leadership and excellence that the Solheim Cup represents within the international women’s golf calendar.
