Once again, the Andalucía Golf Challenge Circuit tournament at Azata Golf was such a resounding success that the “sold-out” sign had to be raised in advance, with late-comers unable to fulfil their wishes to compete at this magnificent Costa del Sol course. At stake were numerous prizes and three places for the Circuit final, where the winners of five exceptional trips to the Riviera Maya will be decided.
Although the day was threatened with rain, and it did in fact rain lightly until an hour before the start of the tournament, the sun eventually shone throughout the day. The wind did make an appearance, but with minimal disruption.
After the competition, a meal that was – as always at this club – magnificent included “fabes” (Asturian-style beans) for starters, pork cheeks for the main course and a tasty dessert.
As for the tournament itself, the scratch winner was (interestingly) one of last year’s five winners of the trip to the Caribbean: Dutchman Timo Aleski van T Zelfde. Juan Luis Torres Polvoreda won category one, followed by Georges D'Anthes; and in category two victory was sealed by Borja Cabrera Amian, with Jose Antonio Valadez Quirós in second place.
In addition to prizes for the top three in each category and the scratch winner, there were two special prizes for closest to the pin, sponsored by IdeaTerrazas, on the 10th and 15th holes, which were won, respectively, by Diego Mena and Jorge Prados.

The Azata event was the second of 30 or so tournaments scheduled to be held during the 13th edition of this hugely popular open amateur circuit, organised by Andalucía Golf/España Golf magazine. The Circuit will cover most Andalucian provinces, in addition to other areas of central Spain, with the majority of events being held on the Costa del Sol.
The Circuit’s grand finale, which will decide the five winners of trips to the Mexican Caribbean, will be held at Almenara on 30 September, followed by a gala dinner at Gran Hotel Guadalpín Banús.
Access to the final will be direct for the winners of each category and the leading scratch player in all the qualifying tournaments, while the rest of the places in the final will be awarded based on the Benahavís Ranking, calculated from points obtained in each leg.
The next event will be on 11 March at La Monacilla, designed by José María Olazábal, in Huelva province.
