The Old Course at Atalaya Golf & Country Club, one of two magnificent courses at the Costa del Sol club, once again shone on the Andalucía Golf Challenge Circuit, which this year is celebrating its 13th edition and offers golfing trips to the Riviera Maya as the main prize for the five winners of the final. The popular appeal of this event (held on 19 May) made it necessary to hang up the “sold-out” sign well in advance.

The course was in extraordinary condition, both the fairways and the greens, and the players were unanimous in their praise.

The weather was superb and, despite the large number of competitors (118), the pace of play was very fluid, which highlights the great design of this course, located halfway between the municipalities of Benahavís and Estepona.

Following the competition, a wonderful cocktail reception/lunch was served in the clubhouse, which preceded the prize-giving ceremony and gifts raffle. We would like to highlight the club’s excellent collaboration with the tournament and the great professionalism of their team led by Andrés Sánchez.

The scratch and category one and two winners each won a place in the final of the Circuit, which is organised by Andalucía Golf/España Golf magazine and (in October) will determine the winners of five fabulous trips to the Riviera Maya.

As for the competition, the scratch winner was José Ugía González (with 38 points). José María Piedra Quirós won category one (41 points), followed by Fernando Guinda Pérez (40) and Marius Haibach Alistair (also 40). In category two, Román Romero González led the way (48 points), Buchnev Yury Alexandrovich (45) was second and Serge Janssens was third (44). 

In addition to prizes for the top three in each category and the scratch winner, there were special prizes for nearest to the pin: on the 16th hole provided by Dani García Groups’ Tragabuches Restaurant and on the 2nd by IdeaTerrazas – won, respectively by Gonzalo García del Campo and José María Piedra Quirós.

The Atalaya event was the ninth of as many as 30 tournaments scheduled to be held during the 13th edition of this hugely popular open amateur circuit, organised by Andalucía Golf/España Golf magazine. The Circuit will cover most Andalucian provinces, in addition to other areas of central Spain, with the majority of events being held on the Costa del Sol.

The Circuit’s grand finale, which will decide the five winners of trips to the Mexican Caribbean, will be held at Almenara on 30 September, followed by a gala dinner at Gran Hotel Guadalpín Banús. 

Access to the final will be direct for the winners of each category and the leading scratch player in all the qualifying tournaments, while the rest of the places in the final will be awarded based on the Benahavís Ranking, calculated from points obtained in each leg.

The next events will be on 24 May at Royal Sotogrande and 27 May at Santa María Golf (Marbella).

The grand finale of the circuit will decide the five winners of one-week all-inclusive trips to the Bahía Príncipe resort in Riviera Maya, with golf at PGA Riviera Maya, El Camaleón Mayakoba and Playa Paraíso. The top two finishers in each category and the scratch winner in the final, to be played on 30 September at Almenara, will travel to the Mexican Caribbean.
