Movements to avoid in order not to make your shoulder suffer
The shoulder joint is frequently exposed to injury in golf for both anatomical and swing quality reasons. One of the main reasons is its unstable structure: the head of the humerus is a much larger hemisphere than the scapular cavity that houses it, and the musculature surrounding the shoulder, or rotator cuff, does not always have adequate muscle tone to ensure the necessary stability. (Picture 1)

Mostly due to the latter reason, women are more prone to shoulder pain than men, aggravated by poor technique (overswing), wrong use of force to obtain distance and osteoarticular weakness (osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, osteopenia, etc.).
Potentially injurious movements to avoid during the golf swing are:
– Hands higher than head height, both in the backswing and in the finish (photo 2).
– Excessive speed after impact.
– Prolonged training on the carpet.
– High pressure on the grip.

Pain usually occurs above the shoulder or along the arm, on its posterior aspect, due to nerve pressure (photo 3).

The first aid includes:
– Rest between 3 and 7 days.
– Avoid picking up weights.
– Avoid sleeping on the painful side.
– Apply ice for 10 minutes, 2 times a day.
– Analgesics for 3 days, according to medical prescription.
– Avoid raising the arm above the head.
From the age of 30-35, the body begins to lose quality in the tissues (bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments) and a prevention routine must be added to our daily routine:
– Specific bodybuilding according to the sport activity practiced.
– Quality supplementation.
– Rest between activities.
What you can do if the pain does not subside by knowing the movements to avoid

If the pain does not diminish within a week, I suggest seeing a traumatologist or a sports physiotherapist to evaluate the situation and avoid further damage (photo 4).
It is also highly recommended to evaluate the swing technique to rule out that it is the cause of the problem. As we have seen, the shoulder joint is complex and delicate at the same time, so do not neglect any discomfort and seek remedies at the first symptoms. Prevention is the key to health (photo 5).

In all cases, remember: “Feel better, live better and play better”. Good golf!
