Unforgettable moments: Seve’s first great one
The best Spanish golfer of all time, Severiano Ballesteros Sota, lived an unforgettable moment on July 22, 1979. The young man, 22 years and 3 months old, lifted the famous Claret Jug trophy at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club, which confirmed him as champion of the British Open.
Seve did not start well at all, as he signed a first card of 73, eight strokes behind leader Bill Langmuir. But on the second day he had the best round of the day with 65 strokes. The Spaniard astonished everyone with his approach to the 16th green from a parking lot where he had voluntarily sent the ball from the tee to gain distance, knowing that he could play it by dropping it without penalty. He became the youngest British Open champion of the 20th century.
