One of Spain’s finest courses, San Roque Old, provided a magnificent setting for the third summer leg of the Andalucía Golf Challenge, a popular circuit organised for the sixth consecutive year by the publishers of Andalucía Golf/España Golf. Located in the Campo de Gibraltar area, designed by Dave Thomas and the venue for the 2005 Spanish Open (a European Tour event held the following year at San Roque Club’s New Course), the course was set up in superb condition for the AGC tournament. It was also another great success, with 100 golfers taking part. As for the results… the category one winner was Carlos Rives Ruiz-Tapiador (42 points), while Iñigo Capell Arrieta and Juan Carlos Vara de la Fuente finished second and third, respectively (both with the same 39 total). Leading the way in category two, with 45 points, was Thomas Holden, with Nigel Birrell second (also totalling 45 points) and José Lázaro López third (37 points). The scratch winner was Miguel Villaescusa Manrique, followed by David Steele and Carlos Olaso Echevarría. Steele is a former European Tour player who once went close to setting a new world record for the most number of holes played in 24 consecutive hours. He nearly achieved this remarkable feat during a fund-raising initiative in aid of the fight against cancer, organised by Andalucía Golf and held at Marbella’s Dama de Noche course thanks to its night-time artificial lighting system. Villaescusa’s prize was a painting by renowned artist Alejandro Hermann, who is based in Marbella and has his studio and art gallery in the town. The special prizes were won by David Holden (ball closest to the pin), and Concha Núñez Paya and Iván Mestre Santos-Suárez (women’s and men’s longest drives, respectively). The three top finishers in each category, as well as in the special categories, received some excellent prizes provided by TomTom, fairways+blue, Holiday Golf and the Somontano “Original Denomination” wine-producing area. All participants 18 and over were given a bottle of 2009 Rueda white verdejo wine from Hacienda de Montecorto, distributed by Bodegas Álvaro Domecq; and numerous gifts were also handed out during the raffle. The prize-giving ceremony was presided over by Andalucía Golf/España Golf co-publishers Antonio Sánchez and Stefan Tjellander, who were joined by San Roque Club’s marketing and operations director, Lidia Muñoz. The next 2016 Andalucía Golf Challenge event will be held on 25 September at Royal Guadalmina Golf Club (South Course). Those wanting to take part should enter directly with the Marbella club.
