100-year-old woman plays golf twice a week

Her case is unique. She has been playing golf for 80 years and continues to do so now that she is a centenarian, and twice a week. American Joyce Cafee just turned 100 and still looks like a ‘young lady’ in her 70s. “I try to exercise every day, I don’t like to sit for too long because I think it ruins a lot of women’s health,” she says.

Aside from golf, Joyce, born in 1916, takes long daily walks and also often swims in a pool. She started playing golf at age 17 and says she enjoys the sport for “the exercise and the feeling of being outdoors and doing something, trying to better yourself… It’s disappointing not to be able to play as well as I did years ago, but I still enjoy it very much.”

The centenarian golfer lives alone in her home in Scottsdale, Arizona, and still has a valid driver’s license, so she can go shopping in her car.

Joyce spent much of her life working as a court reporter before retiring at age 70. Twice widowed, she is the mother of three daughters and also has a stepdaughter. She is also a grandmother and great-grandmother.

The long-lived golfer believes that the key to her long and healthy life is mainly due to her parents, who instilled in her a life of exercise and good nutrition. “I’ve always had a healthy lifestyle,” she says. Joyce eats mostly chicken, fish and vegetables, and occasionally red meat. She has never been one to eat large quantities and rarely tries sweets. “From a very young age I knew that sugar is really a poison and not a good food at all. So I’ve never had much sugar in my diet and I’m sticking to that,” says Joyce, who occasionally accompanies her dinner with a glass of wine.
