In the absence of confirmation of the participation of the German Martin Kaymer, two of the top four players in the World Ranking will play the Volvo World Match Play Championship next May, between the 19th and 22nd, at the Finca Cortesin course in Costa del Sol. They are England’s Lee Westwood and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, second and fourth, respectively, at the close of this edition, at the beginning of March. The great international golf event will be attended by Paul Casey and Rory McIlroy (seventh and eighth in the World Ranking, respectively), Ian Poulter, Robert Karlson, Francesco Molinari, Y.E. Yang, winner of the 2009 US PGA, and the defending champion, Englishman Ross Fischer.

This is undoubtedly one of the best line-ups assembled in a tournament in our country in recent years, with the rest of the names that will compete in this new and innovative edition of the Volvo World Match Play Championship still to be finalized.

The championship will be played in the month of May during this and the next three years, until 2014. This time it will have 24 players instead of 16 and will increase the prize money to a total of 3.4 million euros, of which 800,000 will go to the winner. In addition, a new ranking system will be applied, which undoubtedly contributes to the consolidation of the tournament at the highest level, maintaining the match-play modality that makes it so special.

In the previous edition, in October 2009, the group format, also a novelty at that time, was well received. This time, in order to make the tournament more exciting, participation has been expanded, with eight groups of three players each, which means that there will be more matches to play and the public will have more fun.

The new ranking system includes the defending champion, the winner of the Volvo Open China 2010, the top four players of the Race to Dubai 2010 and eight players who will enter through some tournaments of the European Tour, such as the champion and the runner-up in the Andalucia Masters 2010 and the Andalucia Open 2011. They can also obtain a place through the World Ranking -by continents, according to their position at the end of the 2011 Masters- and the Race to Dubai, and one player is a guest of the sponsor.
