The Andalusian golf sector leaves us a nice news to start this second week of quarantine, in a few days in which the uncertainty about the health crisis of Covid19 worries us all but in which, if we are learning something, is that everyone, in one way or another, we can help.
And that, doing their bit to overcome this situation, is what golf courses from different parts of Andalusia are doing, offering their machinery and human resources to the municipalities of their municipalities to collaborate in the cleaning and disinfection of streets and public spaces.
This morning, Monday, March 23, the golf courses of Benahavís have begun to clean the fairways of the municipality, in an initiative that was born by Rafael Cruz-Conde and was immediately welcomed by Atalaya Golf & Country Club and then by the other courses in the area: Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club, Club de Campo La Zagaleta, Villa Padierna Golf Club, Marbella Club and La Quinta Golf & Country Club.
Thus, Andrés Sánchez -director of Atalaya Golf & Country Club- explains that, from his golf course, they will work with two fumigators and two operators to clean and disinfect the streets of the urbanizations near the golf course. The golf course is working with one of its fumigators and an operator and, in addition, the machinery company Agronimer has provided a second fumigator and another operator for the disinfection of these areas. The City Council, for its part, is providing the cleaning product and diesel oil necessary for these tasks.
This same initiative is being developed in other Andalusian provinces, as is the case of Huelva, where Islantilla Golf Resort has placed its machinery and personnel at the disposal of the Lepe City Council and for some days now has been setting up work teams with colleagues from the agricultural sector to clean the public roads. The Almerimar golf course, on the coast of Almeria, is already using its fumigator to disinfect the surroundings of the golf course and the marina.
In Marbella, this aid project is also already underway with the help of the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina. Thus, as soon as the necessary cleaning products are available, the golf club will start the disinfection of public roads in the urbanizations of Guadalmina Alta, Guadalmina Baja and El Viso.
It should be noted that many more golf courses have made their resources available to their municipalities to carry out these tasks but, in some cases, the municipalities already had the necessary machinery and human resources to carry them out.
According to the World Health Organization, the main routes of transmission of this new coronavirus are respiratory and contact with contaminated surfaces. Therefore, just as it is recommended to maximize personal hygiene, hand washing and disinfection of household surfaces, it is of vital importance to make an effort in environmental cleaning and disinfection of public spaces to reduce the exposure of citizens to the virus.
So, now that the state of alarm is forcing the closure of all sports facilities in the country, the Andalusian golf sector shows that it is everyone’s responsibility to take very seriously the tough situation we are going through and that -if we see ourselves as a team, in which we all think of the common good- we will come out of it stronger.
