Annika Sorenstam, winner of ten majors and member of the Golf Hall of Fame, will be the ambassador of the first edition of the La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational, Ladies European Tour tournament to be held from May 16 to 19 at the golf course of La Reserva Club de Sotogrande. Unanimously considered one of the best golfers of all time, with 72 international victories and at the top of the LPGA Tour’s historical earnings list (with more than 22 million dollars accumulated), the 48-year-old Swede also represented Europe nine times in the Solheim Cup, eight as a player (scoring 24 points) and one as captain (in 2017).
As an ambassador of the La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational, Sorenstam will give a clinic to junior golfers and will also participate in the Pro-Am. In addition, one of the players from the ANNIKA Foundation – an organization that provides opportunities in women’s golf at the junior, college and professional levels – will receive an invitation to play in the tournament.
“I am delighted to support this new event on the LET calendar, which is sure to be fantastic,” said Sorenstam. “The Reserve is a spectacular venue, the ideal destination for some of Europe’s top players to showcase their immense talent.”
“It is essential that women’s golf receives the support it deserves, and new tournaments like the La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational are essential to provide a springboard for the great golfers of the LET,” concluded the Swedish champion.
The La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational will be the first of three stops the Ladies European Tour will make in Spain during 2019. The Cabell B. Robinson layout at the Sotogrande resort will host the LET’s top players in a tournament that could play a crucial role in qualifying for the European team that will attempt to reclaim the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles in September.
“I am delighted that we reached an agreement to add another tournament to the Ladies European Tour calendar and participate in this venture. Sotogrande, either as a destination or as the company I am honored to lead, has always been at the forefront in many ways and we are proud to create the first Ladies European Tour tournament in Sotogrande. Let’s hope it lasts for a long time,” said Topiol, general manager of Sotogrande S.A.
The Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational will have the invaluable participation of the Marbella office of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), a statewide non-profit organization that leads the effort of Spanish society to reduce the impact caused by cancer.
The AECC, always committed to supporting and serving patients and their families, and committed to promoting cancer research in Spain, will be the recipient of the proceeds from the various charitable initiatives that will be launched during the tournament.
La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational is sponsored by Sotogrande SA, the founding company of Sotogrande, and organized by Deporte & Business and the Ladies European Tour. The tournament will have extensive international television coverage and viewers in our country will enjoy it live during the four days through Movistar Golf, Teledeporte and Andalucía TV.
Fans will also be able to follow all the latest news at the tournament website and on social networksTwitter (@lareservagolf), Facebook (La Reserva Sotogrande) and Instagram (@lareservasotogrande).
