With two 18-hole courses, Atalaya Golf & Country Club is undoubtedly one of the most attractive and representative complexes of the Costa del Sol.
Located between Marbella and Estepona, a few hundred meters from the A7 highway, taking the Benahavis exit, the Golf Club, with its Old and New Course, has undertaken an ambitious plan of reforms, already completed in the first phase, which place it at a higher level, a step ahead of many others in the area.
Not surprisingly, its director, Andrés Sánchez, shows his legitimate pride at being at the head of a club that has always been at the forefront in different aspects.
“We have invested” -he says- “around one million euros in making a series of improvements, both in the course and in the clubhouse that put Atalaya Golf & Country Club possibly in the best moment of its history”.
“The first reform,” he continues, “was to make a large terrace in the restaurant, open to the course overlooking the 9th and 18th holes and the 1st tee; and below three offices, one of them specially designed for the organization of tournaments of both the Andalusian Federation and the Spanish or European Tour if necessary.
“The second important reform has been in the New Course, where we have cut a par 4 to make it a par 3, achieving impressive panoramic views of the sea, Gibraltar and Africa. We have also transformed a par 3 (the 16th hole) into a par 4. On this hole we have built a monumental tee using the special stones from the Casares quarry”.
“In the clubhouse,” continues Andres Sanchez, “we have also completely transformed the men’s locker rooms, incorporating hardwood lockers and adding showers and a gymnasium. We have also signed an agreement with Dr. Pete Spurek, who is an eminent expert in bone, leg and foot issues, to provide us with continuous medical assistance, rehabilitation and physical maintenance courses”.
-So you consider that nothing more needs to be done at Atalaya Golf & Country Club, that everything is already fine?
Last summer”, adds Andrés S., “all these works have subtracted us some outings because the fields were a bit upside down, but September and October are going very well. We have significantly increased the number of players and we are satisfied, although now, with the new technologies, bookings are always last minute and we can’t make many forecasts”.
