Thomas Bjørn, victorious captain of the European Ryder Cup team, will meet with the historic record holder of this competition at the Andalucía Valderrama Masters – Sergio García Foundation to be held this week, from the 18th to the 21st, at the famous San Roque course.
Bjørn will match defending champion Sergio Garcia at Real Club Valderrama just three weeks after leading Europe to a 17.5-10.5 victory over the United States in Paris, where the 2017 Masters champion overtook Sir Nick Faldo as the top scorer.
In addition to seeing Bjørn and Garcia in action, fans will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the famous Ryder Cup trophy, which will be on display at Real Club Valderrama during the week of the tournament.
It will be the third participation in the Andalucía Valderrama Masters for the Dane, who has a great record in the tournament, as he finished fifth in 2010 and fifteenth the following year. In addition, the European captain also played six editions of the Volvo Masters at Real Club Valderrama and finished in five of them among the top 24, a fact that reaffirms the good harmony of Bjørn with the course of Sotogrande. In addition, this course has a special meaning for him, as it was the venue where Bjørn made his debut in the Ryder Cup in 1997 in the team captained by the great Seve Ballesteros, who won the first edition played in continental Europe.
Thomas Bjørn: “I have played this tournament well in the past and I am looking forward to returning next week to Real Club Valderrama. Many people, including myself, have great memories of this place in connection with the Ryder Cup, so it will be very special to see the trophy where I made my debut as a player in this competition.
“It will be great to be at this very special week for Sergio as he will be playing host and defending champion and also returning to his home country after making Ryder Cup history. All of us who were involved in the victory at Le Golf National have thoroughly enjoyed the last few weeks and I am looking forward to playing at this wonderful venue again.”
