Carlota Ciganda has confirmed her presence in the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España that will take place at the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina in Malaga between September 21 and 24, a competition integrated within the European Women’s Tour with the main sponsorship of Turismo de Andalucía, Turismo Costa del Sol and Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental.
The Navarre golfer adds the spectacular and effective game of the defending champion, Azahara Muñoz from Malaga, two of the great references of Spanish women’s golf today, who will oppose their talent to that of the best professional golfers on the European continent in a competition that is expected to be exciting from the first beat.
Excellent performance at the Open de España
Carlota Ciganda will make her seventh appearance in a Spanish Open despite her youth -she turned 27 on June 1st-, twice as an amateur, finishing in the top ten in each case.
Eighth in 2007, ninth in 2009 -both as an amateur-, tenth in 2011, fifth in 2012, seventh in 2013 and second in 2014 -in 2016 she was unable to participate due to her brother’s wedding-, Carlota Ciganda was in 2012 number 1 in the European Professional Ranking in her debut season, a feat only previously achieved by the legendary Laura Davies in 1985.
The only Spanish golfer who has won the Spanish Championships in all categories, from junior to professional, the player from Navarre faces this Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España with the intention of completing that very intense and idyllic relationship with golf in our country, the only title she has yet to add to her incredible and impressive list of honors.
Not in vain, her record of triumphs began with the Spanish Championship Benjamin 2000 and continued with the Spanish Championships Alevín (2001 and 2002), Infantil (2003 and 2004), Cadete (2003, 2004 and 2006), U18 (2006, 2007 and 2008), Junior (2006, 2007 and 2008) and Absolute (2006, 2007 and 2008), an overwhelming career dotted, of course, with international amateur triumphs of the highest prestige that have made Carlota Ciganda an icon within the Spanish women’s golf.
Nine victories at the professional level
Carlota Ciganda’s winning trajectory did not stop with her access to professionalism, where she has accumulated another nine victories since she took that step in June 2011 to play the Tenerife Ladies Match Play, a debut where the Navarre golfer was second only to the Welsh Becky Brewerton.
Subsequently, Carlota Ciganda won the Murcia Ladies Open – played at La Manga Club at the end of November 2011, a tournament belonging to the LET Access Series -, the Spanish Professional Women’s Championship – in Talayuela at the end of April 2012 – and, more importantly, the Deloitte Ladies Open 2012 and the China Suzhou Tihu Open held at the end of the same year, where the golfer from Navarre already beat the best players on the European Women’s Tour.
Subsequently, in 2013, the Spanish golfer won the German Open in early June, while in mid-August she contributed to the European team’s victory over the North American team in the Solheim Cup – she also participated, albeit in defeat, in the 2015 and 2017 editions – another of her most cherished successes along with participation in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.
Her spectacular track record was completed in 2014 with the collective triumph of the Spanish team in the International Crown, her first title in the American Women’s Tour, and two more individual titles in the same field, the LPGA Hana Bank Championship and the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, both in 2016.
AROUND THE OPEN
To the cry of “Seve Ciganda”.
Carlota Ciganda, a stellar presence at the RCG Guadalmina, was the only Spanish representative at the recent Solheim Cup, where the large audience gathered to witness the duel between North Americans and Europeans cheered her with shouts of “Seve Ciganda” because her aggressive and spectacular game is reminiscent of the legendary Cantabrian golfer.
Free admission
Admission to attend the four days of competition -from September 21 to 24- of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino will be free of charge.
Parking
In anticipation of the high public attendance, a plot of land adjacent to the RCG Guadalmina, of 160,000 square meters, will be developed in collaboration with the Marbella Town Hall, in order to offer parking spaces. From this parking lot, both the spectators of the tournament and those golfers who wish to play on the North Course of the RCG Guadalmina -which will remain open as usual on the days of the Open- will be taken to the clubhouse in a small electric train which will make the journey every five minutes.
Collaborations for a large tournament
Special mention for various partners who support this event with the aim of contributing to its success, such as VOLVO VYPSA, which provides courtesy cars, as well as the various departments of the City of Marbella and the Mayor’s Office of San Pedro Alcántara, which contribute with their resources and staff (Police, Fire, Civil Protection) to the development of the tournament to control any situation that may arise, a framework also covered thanks to the participation of professionals from the Quiron Clinic, which provides two ambulances with their corresponding medical staff.
Essential support for a tournament of great relevance
The support of Turismo de Andalucía, Turismo Costa del Sol and Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental is part of a sports and tourism promotion effort, aware of the attraction of golf among national and foreign tourists, who find in this sport another incentive when choosing this Spanish region as a destination.
This important competition also has the support of Reale Seguros, Royal Spanish Golf Federation, Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, RCG Guadalmina, Consejo Superior de Deportes and Ladies European Tour. The organization is in charge of the company Deporte & Business.
