27 holes of luxury in Tenerife Golf Costa Adeje, in Tenerife, is one of the great designs of the so-called “Picasso of Golf”, the Malaga-born Pepe Gancedo.
Located by the sea, facing the island of La Gomera, which on clear days seems to be at our fingertips, its route runs through an old banana farm of which the old stone walls that separated the terraces of the plantation are preserved.
They are the 27 most popular golf holes in Spain, 18 of a championship course, par 72, and another 9, Los Lagos, par 33.
Paul De Sterck, is the course director. -His field is the one with the highest number of departures in Spain…
-It could be. I’m not sure, but it’s possible.
-How many are we talking about?
-Last year we had about 80,000 departures and this year we will exceed that figure.
-Isn’t that an exaggeration?
-Well… we have 27 holes. The truth is that it’s a lot of work, but I have a good team to speed up the game and we don’t lose balls on the course. There is not much water and we save time because we are very well organized. It is also an easy course to maintain, we have Paspalum grass, a grass that withstands bad water very well (from the sewage treatment plant, which is what we have here) and it is always green. The greeenes are bermuda, I think the only field in Spain that has them. They are a little bit harder, but there are no stings. They withstand the water we have and the diseases much better.
-The 27 holes were done in two stages…
-Yes, first the Championship Course and then, later, the other nine holes below, the Lakes, which are a little shorter, with more water and better for higher handicaps or beginners.
-Do you think this course is one of Pepe Gancedo’s best designs?
-I think so. That’s what the players also say. The truth is that the estate was a marvel, with unbeatable views. From every hole you can see the sea, there is plenty of space and little construction on the course. To all this we must add that we always have a breeze that makes us enjoy an enviable temperature.
-How would you describe your field?
-To be honest, I would say that it is a fun course, you don’t get frustrated from the 18th hole, as it happens in others. Not here, you finish the round with a feeling of relaxation, because you haven’t made a disaster of a start. It is a very correct course, without excessive complications, very natural, built on the old terraces of the banana plantation, of which you can still see the walls separating it.
-Is it an open course, with wide greens? -Yes, yes it is. The fairways are wide and the greens are fast and correct. There are no dips in all directions. They are honest – If they manage to make eighty thousand tee times a year I suppose it is because of all this, because the average amateur likes the course the way it is laid out.
-That’s right, that’s why most of our players come back again and again. Almost half of them come back every year. When they leave they already book for next year. We offer the best possible golf day: perfect weather, a good course, excellent food, tranquility and good treatment. And the prices are very affordable.
-Its position in the rankings is very high…
-In Leading Golf Course of the World we are ranked number six in Spain, and it is the clients who give us that score. Design, maintenance, etc. are valued, but it is in services where we obtain brilliant results. Few courses can boast of having the Gomera in front of them, very close, the sea, the climate… It is a dream to play Golf Costa Adeje.
