Nestled on a privileged hilltop very close to the Costa del Sol highway, in Casares Costa, is Doña Julia, an 18-hole course that has undergone a thorough renovation in recent months and is currently in perfect condition. It is a great course that pleasantly surprises all those who discover it.
Andrés Moncayo, an experienced golf course manager, has been the managing director of this course since last summer, when there was a change in the ownership of Doña Julia.
“Since then,” he says, “we have focused mainly on improving the situation of the course, which has meant that the course is now in perfect condition: we have regulated the roughs, we have improved the greens 100 percent, the fairways are perfect, we have made special treatments, we have renovated all the bunkers… All this means that the course is in optimal conditions for the game, and this is recognized by all the players we are receiving, who dedicate great praise to the course”.
-What are the main characteristics of the field?
-One of the main features is that it has very wide fairways, one of the widest in this area, and the greens are also very large, between 700 and 1,000 square meters. The holes are very varied and all the clubs in the bag are used on this course. The location of the course is also important, with beautiful views of the sea and the mountains. There is also something very important in this course, and I have been able to prove it this summer with the large number of people we have had: the Mediterranean breeze, which softens the high temperatures and makes the game very pleasant in the hottest months. Another advantage we have is our location, with very convenient access, as we are just a minute away from the coastal highway, the A7. In other words, there is no need for inland travel or complicated access. Another important aspect to emphasize is the subject of the restoration. We have recently inaugurated a restaurant with capacity for one hundred diners, an excellent cafeteria and first class catering, with dishes of real quality.
-What can you tell us about the quality/price ratio? -Doña Julia is right now in a period of relaunching the course to the market and we have set very competitive prices. I can boast that our course is at a level that would allow us to double the price we have for the green fee, but we are not going to do it this year and next year because we want people to get to know Doña Julia and see for themselves its quality, so that this misconception about this course ends once and for all.
