The event, played at Dragon Lake Golf Club (Guangzhou), ended with a victory in extremis (8.5-7.5) for the European team led by José María Olazábal, who has won his fifth title in seven editions of the competition.
Sunday’s singles seemed to be the ideal scenario for the Asian team, who scored the first points of the day with Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee. But Olazábal applied the same recipe as in the last Ryder Cup and the comeback began.
From that moment on, Europe did not concede a single match: five wins to Alvaro Quiros’ one draw against South Korea’s Kim K.T., who scored half a point on the 18th hole.
After the first two rounds, the Asian team led the event by 5-3. The first day, the foursomes, ended 3-1 in favor of Asia, while the fourballs of the second round ended with a 2-2 draw, which gave Europe’s chances of a comeback. In these two rounds, Alvaro Quiros scored half a point in the company of Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts.
