Built in the seventies and designed by the best known of Malaga architects, Pepe Gancedo, called the Picasso of Golf, Torrequebrada is one of the favorite courses on the coast for golf tourism, especially from the islands: British and Irish. And it is normal because it is a delight to play here.
“The course -says its director Francisco Ruiz- was inaugurated in 1976 and its style of construction, its environment and its amplitude is unimaginable nowadays. Its fairways are wide, the greens are ample, and the vegetation is abundant and very varied (we have more than a hundred types of plants)”. “If we were to see Torrequebrada from the air, we would observe,” he continues, “that, although we are in a fairly built-up area, the course is made in such a way that the houses do not come into play. We have had to put nets as a precaution on only three holes. The grove of trees, consisting mainly of pines and palm trees, hardly let you see the buildings when you are in the middle of a fairway, and before you only the sea and mountain views predominate”.
-How would you define the course: complicated, easy to play?
-It is an extremely attractive course that allows you to use all the clubs in the bag. We have holes that may seem very short and simple, like the famous 3, a par three of about 90 m., but that become complicated, like this one, which has a greeen surrounded by bunkers and with the wind almost always affecting.
-The fairways, as I said, are wide and allow you to hit the ball without fear. -What other holes would you highlight?
-The 11th, for example, another par three of 164 m., whose green, very moved, is surrounded by water, bunkers, palm trees and pine trees. The 16th is also a very, very attractive hole. It is a par 4, handicap one of the course, and it requires a lot of skill from the tee to get the ball up to the green’s platform.
-Could you say that this is Pepe Gancedo’s most important field?
-One of the most important for sure, and the first field where he made his mark and the style he would follow in the future.
-What can you offer in Torrequebrada this summer?
-As always, we have offers for early morning play, review, and so on. But the most important thing for us, what differentiates us from the competition, is the quality of maintenance. We are getting a lot of compliments from our customers and that is something that makes us feel that we are on the right track.
