The public water company Acosol, which depends on the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, is clearly committed to sustainable tourism and respect for the environment. Proof of this are the services provided in the eleven municipalities of the association with the reuse of recycled water for irrigation on golf courses and in landscaped areas.
In 2014 Acosol supplied 5,676,028 cubic meters of reclaimed water to the golf courses and continues to work within its commitment to nature and the environment, in a tourism model promoted by the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol that combines quality and respect for the environment.
In this line, it is making steady progress in contributing to the conservation of the environment, sustainability and care for the environment. The use of recycled and reclaimed water for the irrigation of golf courses in an area such as the Costa del Sol is of vital importance. The reuse also means a saving for the water reserves of the La Concepción reservoir and the aquifers.
Acosol currently serves 41 golf courses on the Western Costa del Sol, with the aim of reaching all the golf courses located in this area in the short term. In addition, thanks to the latest work carried out this summer on the basis of the Acuamed and Acosol agreement, 8 golf courses will be incorporated: Marbella Golf, Santa Clara, Río Real, Greenlife, La Siesta, Los Lagos, Los Olivos, and Santana Golf.
Average of 300,000 cubic meters for each golf course
The annual water supply provided by Acosol is around 300,000 cubic meters for each of the golf courses, which means about 2,500 cubic meters per day in the case of the 18-hole courses. Taking into account the weather conditions and the time of the year, since from October to March, depending on how the rainfall responds, they are more likely to be supplied by rain or with their own resources.
The public company takes into account that the golf segment plays a fundamental and essential role in the deseasonalization of the tourist destination, a key part of the socio-economic engine of the area, hence the importance that Acosol gives to support the work carried out by the golf courses in the Western Costa del Sol.
With respect to the quality of reclaimed water used for irrigation, Acosol relies on Royal Decree 1620/2007, of December 7, which determines the requirements necessary to carry out the activity of using reclaimed water, the procedures for obtaining the concession required by law and the provisions relating to the permitted uses and quality requirements in each case.
Through its actions, Acosol intends to continue working within its maxim of respect for the environment, and at the same time offer a satisfactory service to its users.
The company, founded in 1994 to optimize the management of water supply and sanitation services, is a pioneer in Europe in the number of golf courses irrigated with reclaimed water and can count on its track record as a guarantee.
