Golf marathon in El Higueral for the fight against cancer

The Benahavís Town Hall and the El Higueral Club, which is located in the town, will be the protagonists next June 7 of the third Golf Marathon that David Steele, former professional and European Tour player, will attempt to complete at the age of 64. The challenge consists of completing 324 holes of golf, in 18 rounds, in the same day. At the presentation ceremony of the marathon, in addition to David Steele, was present Scott Marshall, councilman of tourism of Benhavís; Rod Bastard, director of El Higueral, which will be the host course; Mayka Pérez de Cobas, president of AECC Marbella and Ignacio del Cuvillo, vice president of AECC Marbella and manager of the Guadalmina Club. The other beneficiary entity, the Contigo Center, which serves underprivileged children from La Línea, was represented by its manager, Hilli Williams, and San Roque Club, the other course hosting a charity tournament, by Stephen Dundas.

This challenge that David Steele is now undertaking is not the first time he has attempted it, but he has already announced that it will be the last. In 1993, at the age of 38, David raised funds to buy an ambulance for the village of Guadiaro by playing 315 holes, in 17 and a half rounds, at San Roque Golf Club. Ten years later, in 2003, he attempted to break the world record for the most holes played in 24 hours, managing to bogey 774 holes at La Dama de Noche, equivalent to 43 rounds of 18 holes.

This time the record to beat is not to get the highest number of holes, although David Steele has proposed to complete 18 rounds of 18 holes, which requires him to putt 324 times in El Higueral. To do so, he will start playing at 7:30 in the morning and plans to finish around 21:30. The main objective this year is to raise as much money as possible for the work done with children Contigo center of La Linea and for cancer research. The AECC is the social and private entity that allocates more money to cancer research: 80 million euros in 400 projects, involving more than 1,000 researchers.
