With a splendid day for the practice of golf and a great sporting and fraternization atmosphere, the Andalucía Golf Challenge Tournament was played in the magnificent Old Course of San Roque Club. Inaugurated in 1990 under a design by the British Dave Thomas, and with the later touch of Severiano Ballesteros in the bunkers, this course is considered among the great courses of Europe and has been the scene of several competitions of the European Tour, including the Open de España and several finals of the Tour Qualifying School.
This tournament at San Roque Club was the fourth event of the Circuit Andalucía Golf Challenge, series of championships open amateurs this year celebrates its seventh edition and is played during the summer in the best clubs of the Costa del Sol. Previously it had passed through the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande and La Reserva Club Sotogrande. The next appointment will be next Saturday, August 19, in another great course: Flamingos, Villa Padierna Golf Club.
All the players, on that occasion with a majority of Spaniards although with numerous nationalities represented, agreed on the quality of the course. The tournament had an added attraction on that occasion: the participation of the Swedish player Peter Gustafsson, who has eight international victories in different circuits and who almost won the Spanish Open precisely at the Old Course of San Roque Club in 2006, when he lost the playoff against his compatriot Peter Hanson. Gustafsson, winner of the European Tour Qualifying School in 2004, starred in a “beat the pro” competition in which he challenged all the players to beat him on hole 3, where a tent with WiGoGo (Wine, Golf & Gourmet) wine tasting was set up.
The awards ceremony, which took place in the elegant clubhouse, where a cocktail with appetizers and a tasty paella was served, was chaired by the editors of Andalucia Golf, Antonio Sanchez and Stefan Tjellander, in turn CEO of Holiday Golf, and was attended by Peter Gustafsson and the captain of the host club, David Campbell. The great organizational work carried out by the Marketing Director of San Roque Club, Lidia Muñoz, and her team should also be highlighted. Apart from the beautiful trophies in methacrylate for the different winners, there were gifts of clothing of leading brands by the fairway+blue store in Puerto Babús, as well as lots of wine from D.O. Somontano, vouchers of 50 euros for purchases in fairway+blue, green fees in different courses, packs of balls, caps, towels and other products.
In terms of sports results, in the first category, the victory went to Pedro Miguel Cevey Mendoza, with 41 points, followed by Alberto Muñoz Sánchez, with 40, and David Steele, with 39.
In the second category, Ana Isabel Irimia Diéguez won with 40 points. José María Caballero Gómez came second with 39 points, while third place went to Francisco Javier Salto González, with 38 points.
In the scratch category, the prize went to David Steele, who won a magnificent painting by the prestigious painter Alejandro Hermann, who has a studio in Marbella.
The special prizes for closest ball to flag and longest drive went respectively to Javier Sierra, Juan Estaire and Garbiñe Mendizábal.
