How to play golf 24 hours a day … without artificial light

The summer solstice is approaching and golf lovers have in Finland an original proposal to enjoy their favorite sport, particularly in the north of the country, where the sun shines 24 hours a day. This natural phenomenon allows access to the green at any time of the day, and especially at night, when the horizon is tinged with beautiful orange tones. The time has come to inaugurate the summer golf season 2013.

A wooded nature and countless lakes deeply mark the design of the golf courses in Northern Finland. Its 18-hole courses are mostly larger than in other places, and the rates they apply are very reasonable. In addition, at that time of the year temperatures are pleasant and hover around 20-25ºC.

Currently, there are 132 golf clubs and it is estimated that one in 40 Finns are members and play golf.

Levi Golf

Levi is a vacation resort -and animportant ski resort in winter- 175 km north of the Arctic Circle, known for its wide tourist offer, which can be easily reached from Kitillä airport. Its golf club has 18 holes distributed in a beautiful landscape next to several lakes and another of its attractions is that during the months of June and July, when the Midnight Sun is at its peak, it is open 24 hours a day. Green Zone Golf Club

For its part, the Green Zone Golf Club course in Tornio makes the sport cross borders, literally, with nine holes laid out in Finland, and the rest in Sweden. The border follows the Tornio River, which is naturally incorporated in the area of the course and as a curiosity, it is said that there is one of the games in which it takes an hour, because of the time difference. In summer this course organizes one of the most famous competitions in the country, the 90-hole Midnight Sun Marathon Tournament, which lasts several days and is held at the end of June.
