José María Olazábal and Miguel Ángel Jiménez finished third in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf, a pairs tournament that pays tribute to the great veteran players of the PGA Tour and is played in various formats on courses that include both conventional 18 holes and par 3’s. The venue was the Big Cedar Lodge, in Ridgedale, Missouri.
Although they did not play in the competition, the event also brought together some of the brightest stars in golf history, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Larry Nelson and David Graham.
The two Spaniards fought for the victory until the last hole and were just a step away from getting into the playoff that decided the title at stake. They finished one stroke behind Kirk Triplett-Paul Broadhurst and Bernhard Langer-Tom Lehman, the protagonists of the final playoff, which ended with the victory of the former after a magical shot by Triplett who holed from the bunker while his rivals missed a short birdie putt.
Jiménez and Olazábal registered 48 strokes (on the par-3 course) and tied for third place with the defending champion pair of Vijay Singh and Carlos Franco, leaders at the end of the third day, who posted a final round of 50 strokes.
