About 125 professional golfers will meet in Alhaurín de la Torre to compete in the last tournament of the Alps Costa del Sol circuit. From September 15 to 18, the Lauro Golf club will host the last tournament on Spanish soil this season of the Alps Tour professional golf championship, which includes the federations of France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland.
This has been announced by the general director of Turismo Costa del Sol, Arturo Bernal at a press conference that took place today Tuesday, September 13, at the headquarters of the supramunicipal body, and in which was also present, the general director of Lauro Golf, Carlos Pitarch; the president of the Professionals Committee of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, Pablo Mansilla; the director of JGolf 18.0 and organizer of the tournament, Javier Gervás, and the golfer defending the title Alps Andalusia 2015, Borja Etchart.
In his speech, the general director of Costa del Sol Tourism, Arturo Bernal, said that for the destination “it is a real honor to host an event of the prestige of the Alps Tour, a reference in golf tournaments because the holding of these tournaments is also an injection of strength in its objectives of promoting the destination”.
Bernal pointed out that “golf, as you know, is one of the most important and reputable segments of the Costa del Sol’s tourism offer, since the high season for the practice of this sport in our destination coincides with the low season for vacation and leisure tourism, which makes it an excellent seasonal adjustment element”.
The manager of Turismo Costa del Sol has stated that “we have a historic month of September in terms of golf events of interest. And it is clear that the celebration of Alps Costa del Sol in Lauro Golf is one of the two unmissable events for any fan of this sport.” “Subsequently, from the 22nd, will begin the Open de España Femenino de Golf, in Aloha Club, another of the tournaments of international reference,” he added.
All of these events position the province of Malaga’s golf offer “in an unprecedented position”, Bernal stressed, and make it clear that the destination is amply prepared to host any of the most important tournaments with the help of the extraordinary equipment available on the Costa del Golf”, he added.
Therefore, “I remind them of the benefits of our destination for this segment, which must be repeated again and again, as our more than 70 golf courses, which account for more than half of the entire golf offer in Andalusia, and makes us the continental European destination with the highest concentration of facilities,” he said.
Golf has great growth potential and brings important benefits for the Costa del Sol because it is about “customers who have mostly a high purchasing power that generate wealth and boost other complementary segments,” said Arturo Bernal, who also pointed out the international dimension of this tournament.
In this regard it should be noted that Alps Tour includes golf federations of France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland, all markets very likely to visit the Costa del Sol to exercise this sport in our destination, so that reinforces the promotion in these markets, already friends of our destination, and the celebration of this event contributes decisively to the enhancement of the value of the Costa del Sol.
Carlos Pitarch, general manager of Lauro Golf, said that for the course “it is an honor to host a tournament of these characteristics, for which we would like to sincerely thank the sponsor”. Pitarch added that “for Lauro Golf, hosting this important championship is very important and supports the work we do throughout the year to improve the course day by day”.
The president of the Professionals Committee of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, Pablo Mansilla, thanked Lauro Golf “for the effort to keep the course in impeccable conditions, despite the hard and dry summer”. In the same way, Mansilla had words of recognition to Turismo Costa del Sol and Turismo Andaluz, “since without them it would have been impossible to organize a tournament of the category of the Alps Tour”, to whose promoter he thanked the choice of Andalusia for the celebration of the same.
The golfer Borja Etchart, defending champion, said he felt “very comfortable in this destination, and delighted to enjoy an environment like Andalusia and the Costa del Sol”.
For his part, the organizer of the tournament, Javier Gervás, explained that this will be the first time that an Alps tournament will be played in Spain over four rounds, like the major tournaments of the European Tour, instead of three. On Wednesday, September 15, the pro-am (professional-amateur) competition will be held, followed by the professional competition, which will be played over 72 strokeplay holes. The tournament will distribute 48,000 euros in prize money and will count towards the world ranking.
