Julia Lopez from Malaga has increased the number of Spanish victories in the U.S. University League this season by winning brilliantly in the SEC Individual Women’s Championship held at Greystone Golf & Country Club, in the town of Birmingham in the state of Alabama. The player from Benahavís is the fifth Spanish player to triumph this year in the American University League, after Sara Sarrión, Constanza Guerrero, Carla Bernat and Casilda Allendesalazar.
Julia Lopez, who is in her second year at Mississippi State University and was part of the Spanish teams that won the gold medal at the U18 Women’s European Championship 2021 and the World University Championship 2022, won the victory after an outstanding 4 under par in the final round that was decisive in this new victory in North American lands, which is added to five others obtained previously since the end of 2021 to date.
In Alabama, a great start, reflected in an opening round of 69 that placed her at the top of the leaderboard after the first 18 holes of competition, gave way to her more discreet round, 75 strokes that endangered her victory in the framework of a premonitory performance, since her end of the day included 3 fantastic birdies in the last three holes.
With a partial of 144 strokes, Julia Lopez was obliged to achieve a magnificent performance to get the victory, a feat to which she got down to work from the first hole of the last day. Four birdies and a single bogey put Julia Lopez in a position to win the title, although she needed another birdie on the last hole to overcome the resistance of Megan Schofill, a golfer from Auburn.
Unaffected by the enormous pressure, Julia Lopez holed the winning putt with mastery and determination, achieving a victory that adds to those previously harvested in the Sam Golden Invitational 2021, FAU Paradise Invitational, Westbrook Invitational, Palmer Cup and Blessings Collegiate Invitational, the last four in 2022.
