In recent years, Mijas Golf has carried out an outstanding work of renovation and conditioning of its two courses: Los Lagos and Los Olivos, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, which have returned to these courses the splendor and prestige they have always enjoyed among European golf enthusiasts.
Under the direction of Lorenzo Pérez Cortés, the fairways, tees and greens have been improved following the recommendations of the USGA and a remarkable work has been done on ornamentation and aesthetics that have radically changed the perception that one has upon arrival. Mijas Golf has once again become a European reference.
Francisco Tirado, the club’s greenkeeper, is satisfied with the work done and “the work we are still doing,” he says. “We follow two basic lines of action, on the one hand the in-depth reforms that we have continued this 2015 and will continue next year, and on the other hand the maintenance of the courses themselves”.
Every year,” he continues, “we do new things. At Los Lagos last year we reformed some greens, among them 17 and 18, this year we will undertake 11, 14 and 16, and next year we will continue with 12, 13 and 15. On this last hole the reform is going to be more profound since we will build a bunker in front of the green and another at the ball drop to make this beautiful par 5 a little more difficult”.
“This year we are also going to finish a lake on the 13th green that was left pending when we did the renovation work. We are also continuing with the beautification and ornamentation work, which is one of the things you notice the most as soon as you arrive. We are putting in a lot of sustainable gardening and applying xeriscaping techniques that combine areas of plants that need little irrigation and others of volcanic gravel, which also allows us to control weeds”.
“In terms of maintenance,” he says, “I think we are in the top 10 in Andalusia: it is absolutely exquisite, both in Los Lagos and Los Olivos. The players leave here more than satisfied”.
