South African Louis Oosthuizen retained the title at the African Open, the inaugural event of the 2012 European Tour, after withstanding the harassment, on the last day, of his compatriots Tjaart van der Walt and Retief Goosen, second and third, respectively. Oosthizen improved by two strokes the round of his rivals, 67 for 69, removing as the holes progressed any doubt about his victory. A birdie on the first hole and an eagle on the third by Oosthizen were decisive in cementing his victory on the course of the East London club in South Africa. The winner won with an overall score of 27 under par, two strokes ahead of Walt and three ahead of Goosen. As for the Spaniards, the best was Jorge Campillo, who finished in 34th position, followed by Agustín Domingo (41st) and Jordi García (62nd).
