RC Valderrama renovates the greens of the first nine holes

Being the most renowned golf club in Spain and one of the greatest in the world is not the result of chance, but of a series of factors that, precisely, are not the product of chance. The key is to have the right ingredients – read estate and design – and to work constantly and meticulously over time to maintain the superior quality standards that define Real Club Valderrama.

The venue of the 1997 Ryder Cup, the American Express World Championships, the Volvo Masters, the Open de España and many other top class tournaments is perfectly prepared to host a new and renewed Andalucía Valderrama Masters next October.

One of the last actions of the investment plan for the course, which began five years ago, has recently been completed. The general manager of the Real Club Valderrama, Javier Reviriego, explains these last works.

“The work,” he points out, “consisted of renovating all the greens and greens on the front nine holes. They were more than twenty years old and it was decided to renovate them all agronomically, without changing the design at all. This first phase has affected holes 1 to 9, and next winter we will do holes 10 to 18”. The renovation work on the greens of the first nine holes lasted ten weeks and was completed in February.

“We have also taken advantage,” Reviriego continues, “to redo all the buggy paths, which were already quite old, with a new design and even a new routing in many of them, and to burn and reseed all the rough areas of the field in order to give them greater uniformity.”

“In short,” synthesizes the general manager of the Real Club Valderrama, “it has been an update, a fairly complete renovation of the course, with which we finish the investment plan that we started in 2012 and that has consisted of renovating practically the entire course.”

Reviriego is “very satisfied” with the results. “It has been,” he explains, “five years of hard work: irrigation, bunkers, the short game area, the driving range, all the tees of the course, tree pruning…, and with this we consider that the course is at a level where we can compete with the best clubs in the world, which are the ones we compare ourselves with. The course, logically, was already a few years old and needed investment to keep us at the forefront”.
