Jorge Campillo is getting closer and closer to taste for the first time the sweetness of victory in the European Tour. The former number two in the world amateur ranking was left in the Maybank Champinship two strokes behind the Indian Shubhankar Sharma, who won in Kuala Lumpur his second victory this season on the Tour and is the leader in the Race to Dubai. Sharma, just 21 years old, played a spectacular final round of 62 strokes for a 21-under-par score. Campillo’s 68 gave him second place, while third place went to Pablo Larrazábal, with a sensational round of 66.
Campillo started Sunday with a four-stroke lead over Sharma and holed an eagle on the first hole at Saujana Golf Club. However, Sharma made four straight birdies from hole 4 to pull within two strokes of the Spaniard, and then holed a long putt on the 9th to cut his deficit to one stroke.
The 31 year old player from Extremadura saw how the young Indian was getting closer and closer, and on the 11th hole he tied the score, with Sharma’s sixth birdie in eight holes, from the 4th. On the 13th and 14th holes, the Indian scored two birdies and took the lead alone, which he would not give up until the end of the tournament.
