The Sergio García Foundation has delivered to the Hospital Universitario La Paz the proceeds obtained during the celebration of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters, 123,116.39 euros that the hospital in Madrid will use to finance the project “Humanization of the X-Ray Unit” located in the children’s area.
Antonio García, uncle of the champion from Castellón and head of the Foundation, presented the donation to Dr. Javier Cobas, Deputy Managing Director of the Hospital Materno Infantil; Rafael Pérez-Santamarina, Hospital Manager; Mª Pilar Moreno Anaya, Deputy Medical Director of Central Services; Gonzalo Garzón, Head of the Radiology Department; Esther Rey, Director of Nursing; and Eduardo López Collazo, Director of the Research Institute.
The interior design project will be financed thanks to the contribution of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters and the Sergio García Foundation, and aims to “humanize” the X-Ray Unit in the children’s area of the Hospital Universitario La Paz with the purpose of improving the emotional care of patients, families and healthcare staff by creating a welcoming, bright, relaxing environment, achieved with an appropriate choice of materials, images and colors. In addition to caring for people, the project will favor the sustainability of the hospital and the planet, through a change in lighting that will contribute to creating a more humane environment and will save 60 percent in energy consumption.
“This project, which we are very excited about, was much needed. We recently invested in equipment, but we lack infrastructure. We have to separate children from adults; the healthcare personnel have been asking for it for a long time. It will take us about three months to carry it out since we cannot stop the activity; the Children’s Hospital, considered the number one in Europe, is equipped with 240 beds and receives 9,000 admissions a year; it is the only hospital center that has all the medical and surgical specialties and where all types of pediatric transplants can be performed,” explains Dr. Cobas.
For Sergio Garcia, “winning the Andalucia Valderrama Masters was incredible, I still haven’t come down from the cloud. It was a very nice tournament for several reasons: Valderrama is one of my favorite courses, I played very well, with confidence, I was patient and I knew how to wait for the opportunities; Joost (Luiten) did not make it easy for me and I think we put on a show, and the support of the public was amazing.
“When the project to humanize the La Paz beam area was proposed to me, I really liked the idea; I am glad to see it become a reality and to contribute to the care of patients and their families, thanks to the tournament and my Foundation.”
The third edition of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters took place from October 19 to 22 at the emblematic San Roque course, where Sergio García added his third victory of the season (Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Masters of Augusta). The tournament, which belongs to the European Tour, was sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Andalusian Regional Government and supported by Rolex, Volvo, Solán de Cabras, Heineken and Osborne.
The Sergio García Foundation, created in 2002 to contribute to the social integration of economically disadvantaged minors and young people through social assistance and the practice of sports, collaborates with several NGOs and charities. In 2003, together with the Deporte y Desafío Foundation, it introduced adapted golf in Spain, a modality that more and more people with physical or intellectual disabilities are practicing every day.
